Stookey and Van Voorhis began sailing against each other during
their boarding school days, then found themselves on rival high school
and college teams (Brown and Yale University, respectively). "We're
as close as sisters and have all the same problems too," laughs Stookey.
So her team could begin training full time in '95, Stookey last
year asked her employer, Pfizer, for a leave of absence from her
pharmaceutical sales job. Not only did Pfizer support her decision, it
gave the duo a grant "so we could do it right and train on the water and in the gym
every day." Van Voorhis also left her job as Brown's sailing coach.
