SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENTS:
1996
1994
- US SAILING's USOC Athlete of the Year
In October, 1995, Madrigali and crew (Massey and Barton) racked up an impressive array of titles
on San Francisco Bay. They started the month with a win at the Soling Pacific
Coast Championship held September 29-October 1, besting 13 other teams with two
first place finishes in the four-race series.
At the Soling North American Championship, held October 3-6, they prevailed
in the 16-boat fleet to win by a margin of four points over the second place finisher.
The Madrigali/Massey/Barton team took the hat trick at the Soling Match
Racing Championships, held October 7-8. Eight teams (four from USA, two from
Canada, one from New Zealand and one from Norway) competed. Madrigali's team compiled
a win/loss record of 11/2 to take the championship title. Finishing second
were the Norwegians with a 7/5 record.
The Match Racing win qualified Madrigali and crew to represent the U.S.
at the Infanta Cristina, also known as the World Soling Match Racing Championship, which
will be sailed in Cadiz, Spain, in March, 1996.
The longest and heaviest of the Olympic classes, the Soling is a keelboat
and the only three-handed sailboat in Olympic competition. In 1992, match racing was
approved for the Olympic Soling event--after a fleet race, the top six boats advance
to the round-robin of match racing to determine the three Olympic medalists.
