TWO USA TEAMS TOP SCOREBOARD AT OLYMPIC REGATTA

SAVANNAH, GA (July 26, 1996)--The women's 470 team of Kristina Stookey and Louise Van Voorhis (Darien, Conn./Webster, N.Y.) and Soling sailors Jeff Madrigali/Kent Massey/Jim Barton (San Anselmo/Santa Barbara/Fairfax, Calif.) have moved to the top of their classes in overall scoring at the Olympic Regatta in Savannah, Ga. Even though the wind shifted constantly at 8-10 knots, today's racing was considered steady compared to yesterday, when thunderstorms whipped up seas and skies and robbed several classes of scheduled races. All ten divisions competed, sailing two races each.

Stookey and Van Voorhis started off with a relatively uneventful second-place finish in race one. In race two, they used current to their advantage, seemingly overstanding the second windward mark and ducking transoms to do so, but breezing free around it in first place. They stretched their lead, only to sail into a windless hole on the downwind leg. As the fleet descended threateningly, the duo recovered and won the race handily.

The Madrigali team, tied for their lead with the Germans, finished second in their first race and ran into difficulties in race two. "We were over the starting line early, just stopped at the gun," said crewman Barton. This team, too, recovered, restarting and fighting back from behind to round the top mark in ninth place. By the finish line, the trio had sewn up fifth place. "We have no regatta strategy, really, for staying in the top six," added Barton, referring to the fact that the leading half-dozen boats after 10 races go on to a match racing event. "The talent runs too deep for us to concentrate on anything but just sailing the best we can."

Europe sailor Courtenay Becker-Dey (Rye, N.Y./The Dalles, Ore.) is in third overall with a third-place finish and a throwout 14th today, while Tornado sailors John Lovell/Charlie Ogletree (New Orleans, La./Kemah, Texas) posted an 8-4 to tie for third place overall in their class. Star sailors Mark Reynolds/Hal Haenel (San Diego/Los Angeles, Calif.) fell to sixth today with a throwout 21st and 15th. The 470 men's division team of Morgan Reeser and Kevin Burnham (Wilton Manors/Coral Gables, Fla.) climbed to 9th today with a sixth- and a ninth-place finish. Still looking "medalish," they are only six points behind the overall third-place finisher. Mike Gebhardt (Ft. Pierce, Fla.) in Mistral Men's division is in eighth overall while his counterpart in the Women's division, Lanee Butler (Aliso Viejo, Calif.), is still holding at 12th overall with a victory in race two today. Laser sailor Nick Adamson (Newport Beach, Calif.) is tied for 17th place while Finn sailor Will Martin (Charleston, S.C.) is in 22nd overall.
