America3 Adds L’Oreal as Official Sponsor

NEW YORK, January 25, 1995 - The America3 Foundation announced today that L'Oreal, a world-renowned cosmetics and haircare company, has joined the America3 1995 America's Cup campaign as an official sponsor of its historic all-women team. L'Oreal is providing financial support and a supply of its numerous products for team members.

"We're thrilled to have L'Oreal as part of our team," says Bill Koch, chairman of America3 and winning skipper of the 1992 America's Cup. "Both L'Oreal and our crew members represent women of the '90s-women who are fit, self-confident, and seek to break barriers."

"These women represent the image of beauty L'Oreal applauds: courage, confidence, and diligence," says John Wendt, senior vice president and general manager of L'Oreal Cosmetic and Fragrance division. "Each woman on the A3 crew is a champion in her own right. We commend these achievers and thank them for the inspiration they have instilled in us all."

L'Oreal's announcement coincides with a weeklong break in the Citizen Cup races, the series of elimination matches that determine whether America3 or one of its two American competitors-Team Dennis Conner and PACT '95-will defend the America's Cup in May. These defender trials began January 12, when the women's team made national headlines by defeating Team Dennis Conner's Stars and Stripes in its first historic Citizen Cup race. The series of one-on-one or "match" races continue round-robin style until the end of March, when the two teams with the most points will earn the right to continue into the finals. The winner of the defender finals will proceed to the final America's Cup competition on May 6 to race against the winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup, the parallel competition between the seven challenger teams from five foreign countries.

As an official sponsor, L'Oreal joins 14 other corporate sponsors that have signed on in support of the women. They include:
