Chevrolet Increases Support of
America3 All-Women's Team to Become
Presenting Sponsor
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - October 27, 1994 - The America3 Foundation announced
today that the Chevrolet Motor Division has decided to increase its investment
in the America3 all-women sailing team, thereby making Chevrolet the major
or "presenting" sponsor of the historic all-women America's Cup
team.
"We were delighted when Chevrolet decided to join us again early on
in our campaign - and we're even more excited about this latest decision
to increase their support," said Bill Koch, winning skipper of the
1992 America's Cup campaign, and chairman of the America3 Foundation.
Under the terms of the new agreement, Chevrolet will increase its financial
support of the America3 team by an undisclosed amount. Chevrolet will also
provide an additional five vehicles to the 15 it has already supplied. In
return, Chevrolet benefits will be expanded to include signage on all official
clothing used by the sailing team, as well as flying its logo on an America3
spinnaker.
"With Chevrolet's leadership in marketing to women, it's a natural
for us to become the presenting sponsor for America3," said Steve McAvoy,
manager of Chevrolet passenger car marketing.
Chevrolet, with the Corvette as the featured vehicle, sponsored Koch and
his winning America3 team two years ago when they first defeated Dennis
Conner to represent the United States, and then went on to beat the Italians
four races to one in 1992.
The women of the America3 sailing team will have a chance to test themselves
against other 1995 America's Cup contenders as they race in the long-awaited
IACC (International America's Cup Class) World Championships, which begin
here this week on October 28 and continue through November 5.
