Hau'oli Smith (Honolulu, HI) Age: 32 Height: 5'7" Weight: 146 lbs. A native Hawaiian, Smith has been immersed in water sports ever since the age of one: swimming, surfing, sailing, outrigger canoes (paddling, surfing, sailing) and yacht racing. For the past ten years, she has actively raced yachts ranging from 18 to 70 feet in a variety of regattas, including the Kenmore Cup, San Francisco Big Boat Series and Mexorc. Her experience encompasses agility and ability at all positions, with emphasis on action at the mast, pit and trim positions. The Hawaiian Yacht Club named her Yachtswoman of the Year in 1992, recognizing her achievements during a historic voyage aboard the 60' double-hulled sailing canoe Hokule'a from Rarotonga to Hawaii, using Polynesian wayfinding. Is currently in the apprentice navigators group under master navigator Nainoa Thompson. Has raced outrigger canoes for 15 years, steering her division to a 1993 Hawaii state championship. She holds a U.S. Coast Guard 100 ton license and honed her leadership skills while serving seven years as a captain of charter yachts. Prior to moving to San Diego after being named to the all-women America3 team in September 1994, she worked as a captain for Atlantis Submarines Hawaii.(1/1/95) |
