Grew up with sister, Katie, another America3 sailing team member, cruising and racing sailboats on the Great Lakes. The women in the Pettibone family are expert sailors. Her mother taught her father to sail, and Debbie learned to tie nautical knots from her grandmother, who is still an active sailor at 70. Began racing at age 14 under her father's tutelage. Is a veteran of a number of major regattas in the Great Lakes and Southern Circuits, including Mackinac and Key West races. Recently was a skipper in the Women's Yacht Racing Association (WYRA) of Miami. Is a 1991 graduate of the University of Michigan, where she played clarinet in the marching band for four years. Before moving to San Diego to begin her America's Cup campaign in September 1994, she was a sail maker at Shore Sails Miami in Florida.(1/1/95)
