Began racing 26 years ago and has more than 50 championships, 15 national and international sailing titles to her credit. Member of the U.S. Women's world Sailing Team in 1982, 1983 and 1994. Named Yachtswoman of the Year by three different organizations in 1983. Has crewed for Dennis Conner in both buoy and long-distance offshore races. First and only woman skipper two all-female crews in the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit (SORC) in 1981 and 1982. Notable wins: 1992-93 Women's World Champion runner-up in Hobie Cat class; 1989 and 1991 Women's World Champion in Hobie Cat 16 class. Organized and directed Women's Week Offshore, a national racing clinic for five years. Also a world class board sailor. Silver medalist in the 1984 Olympic Board Sailing Exhibition. Wind surfed 70 miles in one day to cross Peru's Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. A graduate of Florida International University in industrial technology. Married to naval architect Bruce Nelson of the PACT '95 America's Cup syndicate. They have two children, ages three and five.(1/1/95) |
